Why Use a Dedicated Discount Calculator?
Mental math for "30% off $179.99" is mistake-prone, and most calculator apps make you do two steps. This tool does it in one, supports five different ways to think about the problem, and adds tax for the actual paid amount.
Common use cases
- Verify a "50% off" sale tag at checkout
- Reverse-engineer the original price from a known discount and sale price
- See how much you save before deciding whether to buy
- Compute the final out-the-door price including sales tax
- Compare two coupons by reducing both to a common percent-off
- Decide between "$X off" and "Y% off" coupons on the same item
Tax order matters
This calculator applies tax to the discounted price (the most common convention). Some jurisdictions tax the original price before discount; if yours does, divide your tax amount by the original price to find the effective tax-on-final ratio.
Coupon stacking
- Most stores apply one discount at a time, in the order they choose
- A 10% off coupon on top of a 25% off sale is not 35% off. It is 32.5% off (0.9 × 0.75 of the original)
- Run two passes through the calculator to model stacked discounts accurately
Tips & best practices
Beware "up to" advertising
Headlines like "up to 70% off" almost never apply to the item you are buying. Use the actual sticker price as the original.
Compare unit prices
A bigger discount on a more expensive product is not always the better deal: divide the final price by the units (oz, ml, count) to compare apples to apples.
Check the cart math
Some retailers round per-line, others per-cart. Plug in the line total to see the percent off you are actually getting.
Keep the receipt sentence
The auto-generated "X% off, you save Y" line is a clean record for expense reports or shared chats.
Add tax late
Compute the discount first, then layer tax on top. That is what registers do, and it gives the cleanest comparison number.
Privacy & security
This discount calculator runs entirely in your browser. No prices, item details, or amounts are uploaded, logged, or shared.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate a percentage discount?
Pick the "Price + %" mode, enter the original price and the discount percent. The calculator returns the amount-off and the final sale price instantly.
Can I work backwards from the sale price?
Yes: pick the "Sale + %" or "Sale + $ off" mode, enter the sale price and either the percent or the amount-off. The calculator solves for the original price.
When is tax applied?
This calculator applies tax to the discounted price (the most common convention). Some jurisdictions tax the original price before discount, in which case you should multiply the tax percent by the original price separately.
How do I stack two coupons?
Run the calculator twice. First apply the larger coupon to the original price. Then take that result as the new "original price" and apply the second coupon. The combined effective discount is usually less than the sum of the two individual percentages.
Is the math accurate to the cent?
Yes, the calculator rounds to two decimal places at the very end of the calculation, mirroring how a register prints receipts.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. All math runs in your browser. Prices, percentages, and item details never leave your device.
